Seamounts, canyons and slope: The preference of a new stilipedid amphipod (Crustacea: Amphipoda) for the Bay of Biscay

North Atlantic specimens attributed to the genus Stilipes were first reported by Lagardère in 1977, and subsequently sampled during different research programmes on suprabenthic communities from southern Bay of Biscay Galicia Bank. Their morphological study showed that they belong a new species science, discriminated four known S. distinctus Holmes1908; lacteus (K.H. Barnard, 1931); sanguineus (Hurley, 1954) macquarensis Berge 2003. The was near-bottom water layer with several multinet sledges. Within its distributional area, lagarderei sp. nov. is living between 462 1060 m depth muddy bottoms canyons fine medium sands seamounts. This upper bathyal very rare maximum abundance registered Bank (12.9 ind./100 m2). Considered be mesopelagic species, as for congeners, data herein presented demonstrate nov., colonizes environment, thus exhibiting behavior. An identification key provided.
